Ringside

Filed under: Uncategorized — AZLTRON @ 8:06 pm

I drive a 1996 Buick Skylark Gran Sport. It’s an old car, with a curmudgeon-y CD player which rarely plays the CDs that I want it to play. This can affect what I listen to when I drive, since my car seems to have a mind of its own. Luckily, my car has decided to play Ringside’s new album “Lost Days”. The sound of the band’s sophomore release takes on an old school r&b rock and roll vibe with lead singer Scott Thomas wailing over the top of the soulful music, think Dandy Warhols or Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, with his bono-esque vocals. I know people usually don’t like to be equated to an amalgam of other bands, but I think Bono fronting the “You Gotta go there to come back” era Stereophonics is an apt description that might make some people check them out. The title track featuring Ben Harper probably doesn’t hurt either.

White Lies Remixed

Filed under: Uncategorized — AZLTRON @ 2:14 am

White Lies is a 3-piece from London that shares the Fiction record label with The Cure, Crystal Castles, and more. Their video reminds me of Interpol’s “Evil” video, except with 100% less puppets and 100% more candybar.

Kiss In Cities

Hot on the heels of posting about Performances new album comes an “other two” (New Order Reference) kind of sub-band. Laura Marsden and Joe Cross have formed the band Kiss in Cities and they make upbeat catchy pop music that you can be unashamed to love. Their music is similar to Performance’s albeit with female vocals. Listen up!

Walter Meego - Wondervalley

Walter Meego is set to return this year with their sophomore album “Wondervalley”, if lead off single “Starlight” is any indicator, the album will still have that classic pop sound, but maybe take a harder rock edge. 2011 is looking up!

Performance’s “Red Brick Heart” is a winner!

Performance - Red Brick Heart

Since the Manchster group Performance blipped onto my radar, I’ve always loved their work and I’ve always been late in aquiring it. Their newest album “Red Brick Heart” finds Joe Stretch & Company minus one female vocalist and surviving a label switch, but the music hasn’t suffered one bit. Stretch provides impassioned life advice and storytelling over Performance’s trademarked upbeat pop. Too bad by best of 2010 list is over, this is top 5 stuff.
