Alt Altman of the Junior Boys-esque meets Erlend Oye-ish solo project Digits is set to release a new EP in early September entitled Only Affection. Altman has released a free track off of that forthcoming EP called Because It’s Wrong and the track has a bit of a darker ominous tone. Perhaps some Depeche Mode influence?
The Jukebox Collective has been aptly compared to Art Brut with the Kaiser Chiefs’ keyboard. Their catchy and dance-y jams are sure to catch on.

Neon Indian, one of my favorite new acts to come out in recent years is set to return with a new full length album in October. Crazy analog bleeps, dance beats and Alan Palomo’s vocals are sure to be in abundance on Era Extraña’. I for one am very excited about it. In the meantime to tide you over, Alan Palomo has released two tracks off of the new album for free.
Plus this Miami Horror track he did vocals for. It is ballin’.
If that wasn’t enough, Neon Indian is also releasing his own analog synth that can be purchased with a pre-order of his new album. Check out what it sounds like below.
Hollywood’s Tic Tic Boom is the result of the creative convergence of Mike Delay and Leilani Francisco. Their EP Reasons and Rhymes is an excellent combination of pop songwriting, dance-able beats, and a great melding of guitar and synth. Leilani Francisco’s cute and cooing vocals enhance the fuzzy-inside nostalgia feeling on Just Friends and her vocals lend a sense of urgency to my favorite track “The Floodgates”. I’d describe Tic Tic Boom’s overall sound and being a point on a radar somewhere between Lali Puna and The Sounds, but one thing is for sure, if you are looking for a feel good album to close out the summer with, Tic Tic Boom has what you need.

Hipsters converged on Paper Mill island park in Baldwinsville to watch The Mountain Goats and Bright Eyes perform. The island itself was a great venue that had plenty of space and it was easy to see the bands perform from almost anywhere around the island, except for in the crowd. Especially if a 6ft tall giant girl who decided the best place to see is directly in front of you. I suppose you can guess what happened to me.
I have to say, I wasn’t really that impressed with The Mountain Goats, they were like Steven Colbert leading The Hold Steady, but not as interesting as that would be. Their enthusiasm was commendable though.
Bright Eyes started off strong playing their set pumping out hits like Four Winds, Easy, Lucky, Free, Arc of Time, First Day of My Life, Bowl of Oranges, as well as newer songs like Shell Games and Jejune Stars. The highlight of the show for me was The Brakeman Turns My Way. Such a solid song. The set lagged toward the end and people started shuffling out before the show was over, ultimately after a super funky band intro the show ended with the spoken word intro off of The People’s Key. Overall, the show was worth it, and I hope more bands come out to the Paper Mill Island.
