VNV Nation’s "Faith Power & Glory" and Tour Schedule!

VNV Nation is a band that members Ronan Harris and Mark Jackson formed in Wexford and London. They released their breakthrough album “Empires” in 1999. Ten years, a move to Hamburg, Germany and 4 studio albums later the duo are still at it, combining a diverse collection of industrial beats, synths, and orchestral structures to create their inspiring work.

Thier latest work Of Faith, Power and Glory is a collection of powerful emotion channeled through old school synth pop, industrial, and electro. The raw emotion and hope of the song The Great Divide, featured on the album, finds itself easilly next to the most soulful electronica of Moby and Depeche Mode.

Funk Up Your Life with Alan Wilkis!

Alan Wilkis is an electro/funk/rock artist out of Brooklyn, New York whose tracks on his new EP ‘Pink and Purple‘ are reminiscent of Prince playing with Cybotron. Hand claps and synth bass cascade over pure pop seduction. The first track ‘Snuggle Up to Nail Down’ has the artist harmonizing with himself through a talk box with the finest 80′s synths grooving and glitching in the background. The next track ‘N.I.C.E’ sounds a bit like Rick James with Prince on synth bass. Yes I just used Prince again as a reference point. ‘Gotta Get You Back’ uses a good old fashion clean hook ala Stevie Wonder and some baroque harpsichord breakdowns. The Stevie Wonder vibe continues onto the title track ‘Pink and Purple’ until the track explodes into some 80′s solo style guitar riffing. ‘Dance with You’ continues the party in 80′s pop bliss style with ascending dance funk melodies. The final track ‘Time Machine’ sounds like a solo ballad from Martin Gore from Depeche Mode. Overall if you’re looking to get a house party started with an electro-funk slant, Alan Wilkis’ ‘Pink and Purple’ will not dissapoint, it’s electro-funk with a retro-futuristic edge.

Lowfish Burns the Light Out on New Album!

Toronto born Gregory De Rocher has been using the moniker “Lowfish” since 1995 to label his unique brand of electronic that stradles IDM and old school synth pop. He got his name because he prided himself on the “lo-fi-ish” sound of his recordings, and the name stuck. On his new album Burn the Lights Out, Lowfish again uses vintage technology and analog skills to make music that fans of Depeche Mode, Skinny Puppy, Giorgio Moroder, Aphex Twin or Modeselektor will no doubt enjoy. Sometimes dark, sometimes poppy, always innovative, Lowfish has got the goods.

(NEW MUSIC!) Solid Gold is Getting Over Bodies of Water

Solid Gold is an electronic indie band from Minneapolis. They were picked by UK indie popsters The Ting Tings to support them when they visited the Mini Apple. They have an album coming out entitled “Bodies of Water” that is sure to thrill those out there who love the warm hum of a melodic synth and pleasant, poignant vocals. If their lead single “Get Over It”, we’ll soon be treated to a whole lot of classy synth pop.

I Turn My Camera On

So I’ve been saving up all summer to buy a new DLSR camera to use for my enjoyment and also the advance my graphics capabilities. After reviewing a lot of different cameras, weighing the pros and cons of an older model versus getting a newer model, system lens quality, special features etc., I’ve settled on two cameras that could be good buys.

First there’s the new Nikon D60:
This is what the market wants you to believe is the more utilitarian camera amongst a sea of entry level DSLRS. As it costs about 50 dollars less. All the reviews on it are glowing, saying it can stand up to the punishment that many photographers will put it through. It’s got a stop motion capability built right into the camera which is neat.

Then there’s the Canon Rebel XSi.

I used my friend’s Rebel XTi last semester for some of my photo projets and I loved it. This year I was seriously thinking of just picking up an XTi and using that, but then I thought, “Why get an older model when I can get the super cool new model?” So I checked out the XSi and review places like Cnet seem to think it’s an improvement over the previous model and that the Canon outshines the Nikon in image quality. Which is really why you get a bigger camera like this in the first place. For serious. Plus I like to buy American.

So I’m submitting this to you my readers to give me your opinions on the matter, if you know even less than I do, well, just look at the two cameras and tell me which one you think looks cooler. In the meantime I will upload a few camera and photography related songs for you to enjoy.

Dearestazazel

“Hey, you got synth-pop in my hair metal!”

“Hey, you got hair metal in my synth pop!”

“Actually, it’s Atlanta based rock group Dearestazazel! Wow!”

Dearestazazel employ their unique talents to making a number of epic and musically complex songs that are driving and catchy on their new album Be Mine. The synth and guitar often entwine in a sweetly serpentine way that sometimes yields something akin to Violator era Depeche Mode and sometimes yields something more like a dark sped up Def Leppard thanks to some sweet riffs and the wailing of Peter Felix Armstrong.

I’ve never heard a more complete merging between so seemingly disparate genres. Welded and soldered together in such a manner to rock stadiums with a sound that will catch the ears of fans of the New Pornographers and Van Halen.

The Presets: Apocalypso

I had been aware that the Presets had a new album coming out, but not until I listened to it did I know how great of a new album they had. Their first album, Beams, finds the Melbourne duo thrashing through a series of dark lo-fi electro rave-ups and a few surprisingly melodic tunes, most notably “The Girl and the Sea”.

Their new album, Apocalypso, builds on all aspects of their sound. Whereas Beams was unabashedly raw and punky, Apocalypso is more refined. Julian Hamilton’s vocals have never sounded better especially on lead single “The Boy’s in Love”. Another standout track is the Michael Jackson informed “Yippiyo-Ay” which single handedly blew my mind and eliminated the competition for #1 dance song of the summer. The duo have crafted more dark romance into their club anthems reminiscent of the dark lord Sauron commanding an army of undead to dance into the night.
