stellastarr* Unveil New Track "Numbers" on Myspace!

NYC based art-rock group stellastarr* have released a new song called “Numbers” via their Myspace from their forthcoming album. The track rocks with all the rough edges and innovative female backing vocals we’ve come to expect from the haunting and harmonious quartet. The band have also recently sold out their 5 night residency at NYC’s Piano’s.

A Very AZLTRON Halloween! Danse for the Macabre!

It’s that time of year again, the leaves have changed color, it’s getting colder, the winter is creeping in on us, and yes there will be drunken Halloween parties. Being the generous individual that I am I am going to share with you my custom Halloween mix of 2008. So dress up as Joe the Plumber, Sarah Palin, a French Maid with a breezy chemisier, or just as a sorority girl in her underwear and enjoy the tunes that I have compiled for this Halloween season. After all, you’re the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.

The New Up

San Francisco based rock group The New Up have crafted an EP entitled Broken Machine that calls on psychadelic influences as well as garage rock influences. They sound something like if you took Midnight Movies, Metric, and The Stills, put them in a blender with some vanilla yogurt, a flute and set it to high. Thier rock is smooth linear affair with some added guitar crunch once in a while, like a female fronted late 80′s era Echo & The Bunnymen. Pretty neat.

The New Up – Ginger Tea

The New Up – Top of the Stairs

A Very Azltron Halloween!

Okay, so tomorrow is Halloween and many people will be gallivanting about the country side in silly costumes (or scantily clad absences of costume) and I will be working. I’m getting through this idea though by putting together a Halloween mix. I played all of these on my show on Monday and I felt like it was one of my best shows yet. Riddled with copyright free Vincent Price quotes and a distinctly eerie yet extremely dance-able atmosphere.

Mp3 – Do they know it’s Halloween?

Mp3 – Oingo Boingo – Dead Man’s Party

Mp3 – Echo & the Bunnymen – People Are Strange

Mp3 – Michael Jackson – Thriller

Mp3 – The Rakes – Terror

Mp3 – The Faint – How Could I Forget?

Mp3 – The Fever – Hotel Phantom

Mp3 – B.A.D.A.B.O.O.M. – World Leader Pretend

Have You Ever Seen a Portal?

Okay, a few things. It’s late. I’m behind on a lot of work, I’m in the 24 hour study room of the library and I’m basically screwed. Anyway, like any time I’m stressed I channel it into something creative. Like a mix. I’d like to share a few of the with you.

MP3 – Nashville Parthenon – Casiotones For The Painfully Alone

I got into CTFTPA last winter and like all good synthpop stark emotional statements and stark clean synths and beats always make for the best ironic dancefloor experience.

MP3 – Tower of Strength – Gene Mcdaniels (Burt Bacharach)

I think it was summer 2005, and my mom wanted me to get some Burt Bacharach for her, and I listened to a bit of it and was shocked to find that it was some spectacular poignant pop decades ahead of it’s time.

MP3 – Don’t Let It Get You Down – Echo & the Bunnymen

Yet another of my post-punk fascinations that has weathered through the years and exists to this day eroded of two founding members but still kicking. Ian McCulloch has a way of making the most mundane and predictable lyrics somehow compelling and intensely emotive. Then again he made nonsense lyrics about waves the most epic song in the early 80′s on Ocean Rain, so it’s not too far of a stretch.

See you on the other side.

The Flesh seek Justice through Fire

Filed under: Echo The Bunnymen,The Flesh — AZLTRON @ 7:54 am

The Flesh’s new dark and dangerous songs from latest LP “Fire Tower” bounce along to their familiar stop and go rhythms, but the work is more developed than their debut. The grooves flow, the guitar spirals around melodically but the biggest change in their sound is that keyboardist Gabriella Zappia offers up lead vocals this time around. I find that her sultry vocals emote more and add a connection to the urgency that the band so often evokes. The best example of their new more cohesive sound is “The Cradle, The Brothel, and the Bible School”, with its incredibly catchy hook and increasingly funky sound. The Flesh also make excellent use of some strings on the tracks “Firetower” (3) and “Justice” (7). On the former, the strings lend an ethereal touch, veering directly into Echo and the Bunnymen territory; on the latter they add a satisfying dramatic determination. “Cross the Ocean” (11) is a beautiful adventure into the acoustic ballad and it is hypnotizing and rich. The Flesh prove that they are more than just a copycat dance/punk band, and I for one am eager to see where they go next.
