Have a Very AZLTRON Thanksgiving!

Well, it’s that day again, the day to gather around with family and rub a long fork like utensil and a knife over a very dead piece of poultry. Pass the cranberry sauce ’cause Grandpa is going to tell you about the weather and the news. It might be time to start bracing yourself for an extended amount of time with your nuclear family. Time to find your zen, get in your happy place and endure the hot coals of superficial niceties. If you find all this togetherness a little awkward (Like Me), it’s also the day to trace your hand and turn it into a poorly rendered turkey! Check out this tom to the left! Pretty handsome eh? Anyway, I’ve composed a mix of entertaining Turkey-Day tunes. Enjoy!

Klumpfish Remixes Lykke Li

Klumpfisk returns with an sublime dream pop take on up and coming Swedish pop songstress Lykke Li. The original versions gentle clank is replaced with a wide open ambience and some raw guitar work.

This snippet came with the remix:

“To those of you who appreciate genuine handcraft in these times of mass-produced nonsense, Klumpfisk presents yet another trip to the shores of the Baltic Sea. Made from small amounts of matter, but from larger amounts of time, before you lies a beautiful example of what a pop song of 2008 could or could not be. If this doesn’t make you shiver, either your brain or your nerves may be damaged.”

Dieter Schöön

Some artists like to stay safely within a sound, to work with what they’re comfortable with to create songs. Dieter Schöön from Sweden is not one of those artists. On his latest release “Lablaza” he combines classical sounding horns, accordian, strings and guitar with lo-fi blips, beats and beeps that sometimes shoot past you so fast they give you whiplash. His sound is something like if Beck and Peter Bjorn & John collaborated on an album with Clor producing. His songs don’t always hit the sweet spot but you’ve got to hand it to him, there’s not anything else out there that sounds exactly like him and that’s admirable.

Jon Sonnenberg

From time to time I feel the need to search out music that sounds like Jens Lekman or Peter Bjorn & John, I’m not particularly sure why, but often I’ll go through all the e-mail submissions until I find a suitable indie-folk artist who recombines classical inspiration into inspiring compositions of his own. I was truly fortunate to come across the Jon Sonnenberg ‘Acoustic Selections’ as he fits the bill exactly. Harnessing beautiful strings, guitar and various instruments that can be plinked and plunked in harmony Sonnenberg has created some songs that should have those folks in Gothemburg and Amsterdam sitting up and paying attention, and the coolest thing is he’s from Cleveland. America has a new hope in the great indie-folk cold war.

Jeremy Thinks You’re Alright

Jeremy is an up and coming dynamic folk duo comprised of Lars Christian Olsen (age 19) and Øivind Hatleskog (age 21) from the Norwegian town of Stavinger. They play a soft jazzy pop sound that is in the same vein as folk-pop masters Simon and Garfunkle. I don’t know what they put in the water up there in Norway, but they just keep producing more and more excellent folk-pop groups.

The gentle vocals and breezy light melodies evoke Belle & Sebastian at times. The Jazzy thump of “You’re Alright” is thoroughly enjoyable from it’s opening melodic salvo and you can hear the Kings of Convenience influence almost immediately. I have no problem with this, because, really, is there a better template for young bands to use than Kings of Convenience? I don’t think so. Their EP has a few great surprises, but my favorite tune would have to be the beautifully bell accented “Someday With You”, it’s just a fantastic song. Jeremy released their EP, conveniently titled, the “Jeremy EP” on May 29 in the United States. I couldn’t think of anything better to start off the day than listening to some nice bouncy folk-pop.
