Review: Division Kent’s Gravity is a Heavy Trip

Division Kent is a two piece from Zurich, Switzerland that plays swirling, dark new wave rock composed of two members; vocalist Andrea B. and instrumentalist Sky Antinori. Their music is at times dark and heavy, calling to mind the work of psychedelic indie band Midnight Movies due to the ominous melodies and sultry voice of Andrea B. While this is the primary musical mode the band is set in there are some fun surprises along the way.

Right off the bat the band set a mood with the atmospheric “No Kryptonite” that calls to mind Blonde Redhead. “Pat the PanAm Pilot”, starts off with some quirky keyboards and a skeptical narrative of the life of a successful pilot. From there the energetic “She’s Going Places” takes flight with guitar work and a beat that sounds like a fusing of Lali Puna and the Cure. “The Big Hush” is another experiment in combining a heavy atmosphere with haunting vocals. The track “In The Headlights” separates itself from the rest of the album using ultra bendy bass and a Casio beat that gives way to the most memorable chorus on the album. I could see this track being used in a dramatic scene of a movie. For all I know it might be already.

Once the album gets through most of it’s down tempo song, the arrangements, clicks, beats and synths really shine. “L’huere Blue” erupts with a dark 80′s pop sensibility and cascades of melodies and bells. Perfect for your retro goth prom. If “L’huere Blue” is an entrance song to said retro goth prom, then “Rooftop Rallye” is the party starter. Waves of aggressive bass pulse as Andrea B. purrs her way through the song. The next track is the most fun off of the album, entitled “Offshore”, featuring the most upbeat vocals and guitars that call to mind VHS or Beta in their heyday. The album winds down with the slinky duet “Salty” and comes to a close with the hauntingly programmed number “The Year of Magical Thinking”.

All the attention to detail makes Division Kent worth listening to. There are a couple spots on here where their formula, no matter how well done, feels worn out, dark electronica rock with deep sensual female vocals, we get it. It’s when Division Kent change up their style a little bit that they really shine, on tracks like “L’Heure Blue” and “Offshore” where their sound moves past brooding girl territory and into kicking electro rock pathos. Whether you’re looking for music to sulk dramatically to or music to get the party started, Division Kent has what you need.

Elkland/Goat Explosion Reforms as The Drums!

Some of you might remember the short lived but excellent New Wave band Elkland that formed out of Horseheads, NY (Upstate New York!). The band released their debut album Golden in 2005 and supported such bands as VHS or Beta as well as Erasure before breaking up. Singer/Songwriter Jon Pierce soon after reformed his old band Goat Explosion with old friend Jacob Graham and produced a 4 song EP entitled Hope Is Alive. Then the band went quiet. Jacob resurfaced with a new band called Horse Shoes just recently and even more recently the two have announced they got back together under a different name; The Drums. They had this to say on their new Myspace:

‘ “We just wanted to start a band that sounded like The Wake.” say The Drums, “We heard their song ‘Pale Spectre’ and went crazy! Maybe our music didn’t turn out sounding too much like The Wake but we’re really just like everybody else, chasing that perfect pop song. And that’s not so bad right?”

Jonathan and Jacob met each other at summer camp when they were children. they’ve been best friends ever since (except for a five year period when they hated each other). They’ve both had successful musical careers individually, but this is the first time they’ve sat down and written songs together. “We’ve always wanted to make music together, but distance and violence has always stopped us.”

the band is hard at work on their first record, tentatively titled “Forever”, which should be out just in time to be your perfect summer soundtrack, or the soundtrack for your perfect summer. ‘

My Dear Disco Invites you to Dancethink!

My Dear Disco is a band out of Anne Arbor Michigan being hailed by many as that area’s new “it” band. They may not be far off. The band pumps out funk-tastic electro that dabbles in r&b and swirly island rhythms with full on soulful vocals. What are they putting in the water in Michigan?

(NEW MUSIC!) Solid Gold is Getting Over Bodies of Water

Solid Gold is an electronic indie band from Minneapolis. They were picked by UK indie popsters The Ting Tings to support them when they visited the Mini Apple. They have an album coming out entitled “Bodies of Water” that is sure to thrill those out there who love the warm hum of a melodic synth and pleasant, poignant vocals. If their lead single “Get Over It”, we’ll soon be treated to a whole lot of classy synth pop.

Get Your Telescopes…

Kentucky based dance rock band VHS or Beta released their new album “Bring on the Comets” on Aug 28. If I were to use just one word to describe the album it would be “ambitious”. Producer Brandon Mason(Secret Machines) helps bring about a more sweeping epic feel to “Bring on the Comets”. Gone is the slippery post-punk production, and here to stay is a monolithic pure pop production. The sweeping guitar lines and simple keyboard melodies sometimes evoke the sense of wonder that the band is going for, like on the title track “Bring on the Comets”and debut single “Can’t Stand a Single Word”, and other times the guitar gets so heavy that it feels chunky instead of funky, like on “Love in My Pocket” and “Burn it All Down”. As per usual, VHS or Beta always sound the best when they employ nimble guitar work over man machine drum and bass, like on “Fall Down Lightly” and “Time Stands Still”. It’s surprisingly satisfying to hear an acoustic guitar in the mix on occasion. Vocalist Craig Pfunder also steps up to add to the sonic agility of each song by laying down hook after hook of his Robert Smith/Simon LeBon/Dave Gahan-esque vocals. Ironically though, as the bombast of each song settles, everything comes through stronger.

Extraordinary Ghosts

Filed under: People Noise,VHS or Beta — AZLTRON @ 1:45 am

People Noise is the product of Zeke Buck and Matt Johnsony. Zeke, formerly of VHS or Beta, and Matt formerly of Boom Bip. They both left their respective bands feeling limited inside the structure of what the bands were doing. They wanted to be more free with their music, to make music that is distinctly human rather than man machine drenched in synthesizers and mechanical rhythms. As much as I love electronic things, I have to admit that sometimes enough is enough and I have to listen to something else, like folk, pop, or even *gasp* acoustic ballads! So I can only imagine what it was like to work on extremely technical mechanical riffs for 10 years.

People Noise’s debut album “Ordinary Ghosts” definitely delivers upon its promise to be more human. While Zeke Buck offers up spectacular guitar riffs as always he also proves he has some startlingly good vocal chops as well. I was surprised to learn that he was a well known opera singer in his youth, until he hit puberty. It was said that he trained with a blind blues musician to regain his confidence in his vocal ability, and regain it he did. His piercing vocals cut through the walls of guitar sound with an envelope of soothing reverb. For Zeke to strike off on his own without his fellow VHS or Beta band mates, this release sounds very fully formed and at times it has the feel of some of VHS or Beta’s more atmospheric tunes minus the dance beats, which I don’t mind at all. The rock beats allow Zeke’s guitar to roar to life in a way that they never could in a 4 by 4 stomp. Also the lack of pressure to make dance music also allows for some sensitive ballads that never would have been possible with VHS or Beta. “Turn Around” features some beautiful cascading synth and modestly triumphant guitar melodies that makes it a mellow favorite of mine. Another favorite of mine is the urgent “Harrison Bergeron” that makes use of soaring guitar lines and the seemingly endless amount of effects pedals that Zeke Buck employs.

Long story short, if you’re looking for some pyrotechnic guitar work with a heart and soul, give People Noise a shot, you won’t be disappointed.

New VHS or Beta

VHS or Beta posted 2 new tracks off of their upcoming “Bring on the Comets” album. I have to say they sound quite a bit different. While the songs are still dance-able, it seems like the songs are built around the vocals this time around rather than having the vocals injected into dance numbers. While we’re on the topic of the vocals, they have improved a great deal but they still don’t manage to make their own imprint. Most listeners are sure to have Duran Duran/Depeche Mode Deja Vu upon contact. Another things that stands out to me right away is the lack of the catchy lead riffs that made VHS or Beta’s “Night on Fire” so addictive, this is most probably due to the lack of founding Guitarist Zeke Buck who left to form “People Noise” with the former drummer of Boom Bip. They are set to release their excellent debut LP “Ordinary Ghosts” later this month.

Obvious first single “Burn it all Down”, still rings with the flange tinged builds and bass thumps that VHS fans are used to, while “Can’t Believe a Single Word” employs vocal grooves and spare piano to get it’s point across. It’s still too early to make a call on the entire album but the songs here are solid to say the least. The bass lines and the man machine drumming are still there, but they’re lacking something, an energy, an effect, or more likely a guitar player.

Noisy People and Motocades

The other day i was looking into what was going on with VHS or Beta’s new album, and while I was on their official site, I found out that guitarist Zeke Buck had left the band after ten years to collaborate with Mathew Johnson of Boom Bip on a new rock project. Having seen VHS or Beta perform live at Alfred University a while back and seeing Mr. Buck play live leaves me with some high expectations of both this new project and VHS or Beta’s new project. People Noise does not disappoint. Rather than the experimental funk based guitars of VHS, there are some huge riffs and feedback thrust alongside some fist pounding mid-tempo drums. Zeke Buck also offers up some surprising vocal chops. It all works together in a spacey compelling way, and the guitar work has immense personality to it. Their debut “Ordinary Ghosts” comes out later this month.

Secondly, I received a request to review a band from Auckland, New Zealand band called Motocade. At first listen I can hear some clear strokes influence in the form of their linear guitars, but they take their work in a more manic bouncy direction. It adds to the nervous confessional theme on the excellent single “My Friends”, which calls to mind going out with friends for no other reason than routine and the desire to break that routine. The delirious beat and spoken word breaks carry the song home. The band have respectable range in both their guitar riffs and in the vocals of Eden Mullholland, and their new EP “Into the Fall” is solid.
