An Interview with Gentlemen Hall

Filed under: Art (General) — AZLTRON @ 5:16 pm
I spoke with the Boston born synth/rock/pop group Gentlemen Hall about oompa loompas, flutes, and flopped celebrity musicians. Oh and also about their busy year and great album When We All Disappear.

New Wesley Cartoon Plus You Won’t!

Filed under: Art (General) — AZLTRON @ 8:32 pm

Okay, so I’ve been busy. Student teaching and such. I’ve been teaching cartooning and here is my example page that I did for the kids. Also, I’ve been really getting into this band “You Won’t”. The track “Television” is my fave off their new album.

Here are some autobiographical comic book pages that I’ve completed. Find below a Flaming Lips song that completes the message.

Talking with Tic Tic Boom!

Filed under: Art (General) — AZLTRON @ 9:37 am

I had a chance to correspond with Mike DeLay and Leilani Francisco of Tic Tic Boom about their new EP Before the Sun Rises.

You guys (Mike DeLay and Leilani Francisco) met each other while you were bartending, can you talk about that and how you hit it off  musically?

Leilani: Mike and I both worked at this really cool bar in Hollywood called the Coach and Horses. It was an old dive-y place with all sorts of Hollywood history, a great neighborhood vibe and an awesome jukebox. Mike was still playing with his last band which he had moved down from Seattle with. We quickly became friends, bonded over music and had the same sarcastic sense of humor. We started dating, his band broke up and he was in need of a new project. I had written a couple of songs and we worked them up and brought some friends on board to play with us. We moved into Mike’s rehearsal space down an alley on Hollywood and Vine and just stared writing and practicing. (more…)

Scout returns with “All Those Relays”!

Filed under: Art (General) — AZLTRON @ 8:17 pm

Scout is Ashen Keilyn (vocals) and Steve Schiltz (guitar). Some of you may recognize Steve’s name as he is the frontman of NYC band Longwave. He also produced the bulk of Scout’s new album All Those Relays and he brought along his Longwave bandmates Jason Molina and Shannon Ferguson. To top it off, Ashen Keilyn even got Spoon drummer/producer Jim Eno to record three songs on All Those Relays.

I usually shy away from girl fronted emotional indie rock, but the sheer bevy of talent Keilyn has behind her begged me to give her a shot and I’m glad I did. Tracks like Have I Said Enough remind me of the best of Azure Ray and Under Attack and Please Excuse Me have a frenetic pace and fuzzed out atmosphere that reminds me of the more aggressive Longwave tracks. The lead off single So Close probably shows off Keilyn’s pop song writing chops the best but All Those Relays has enough variety to get you past the singer/songwriter stereotype and have you enjoying the sounds and the songs.

The Illness Create Comic Biography!

Filed under: Art (General) — AZLTRON @ 7:38 pm

California’s The Illness isn’t typically the music that I go for, but you’ve got to give the slam rock fusion band some credit for telling their story in comic book format. I am also writing a paper on comic books and literacy, so everything comic related is super relevant to me right now. Yay grad school!

Interview with Battle Ave!

Filed under: Art (General) — AZLTRON @ 1:41 pm
Battle Ave is a band from Woodstock (Upstate) New York. Their sound is a bit like Pavement and other early 90′s indie rock guitar groups. I spoke with them about their origins as a group and their influences.
