Russia’s Cheese people is an eclectic group with self professed inspiration from the disparate likes of Gloria Gainer and Prodigy. From the Russian countryside of Samara the quartet had only a slow dial up connection to stay up to date with the modern world so the fact that they fall into the ranks beside other female led dance groups like CSS, New Young Pony Club and Yelle is surprising. Singer Olya Chubarova is particularly notable for her ability to go from affected punk vocals to Blondie-like vocal hooks all within the same song. Truth be told though, their sound is funky and eclectic enough to place their sound closer to an amalgamation of My Dear Disco and Salme Dahlstrom, but let’s be clear here, this band could do whatever they want musically, and they are by recording their next album on totally acoustic instruments.
